Dutch Oil Ball | Happy New Year!

It is the last day of the year. My husband and son bought oliebollen in the center of our village at a mobile stall. Eating oliebollen (oil balls) on New Year's Eve is a Dutch tradition. The filling of the oliebol could consist of raisins, currants and apple and succade. My husband bought oliebollen with and oliebollen without raisins.

Oliebollen
Oliebollen!

I decided not to eat oliebollen this year. But when I saw the oliebollen, I could not resist the temptation  (1 oliebol: 266 Kcal). Oliebollen are usually served with powdered sugar. Do you also have a specific tradition on New Year's Eve?

Our powdered sugar.

I wish you all the best in 2017. Happy New Year!

  4. Happy New Year, Jedidja. I have enjoyed your blog and will continue to view it in 2017. Here in the south it is a tradition that we have blackeyed peas, pork and greens for our meal, which I plan on having. Have a blessed day. Madeline

  6. Thank you for introducing me to this tradition. I have a direct line of Dutch descendants and it will be fun to begin this practice.

  11. I said in a post up above that we had no New Years traditions...but come to think of it, We do have one. When I grew up in Michigan I never heard of eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year's day... But we moved to an area that did. So... several years ago we started having pork and sauerkraut on New Years day. We are having it tomorrow on January 1st.

  13. That looks very interesting! Would love to try it. I live in Florida, which is in southern USA. New Year's Day tradition in the south is black-eyed peas and ham. (or hog jowl...but not for me!). We actually make something called "Hoppin John", which is the black eyed peas cooked with onions and green peppers, etc., and served over rice. That is good. I also like pork and sauerkraut...but that is a northern tradition not as well known in the south. We've lived in both regions, so we can go either way! Happy New Year! May God bless you and yours in 2017!
