Dat was het plan.
Deze week kon ik weer een nieuw boek ophalen bij het afhaalpunt. Dat moment blijft leuk. Zo’n melding dat het er is.
Met zorg uitgekozen op Vinted: De Troostbibliotheek, van Sara Nisha Adams. Prijzen vergelijken. Even twijfelen. Welke staat? Welke prijs? Deze zat net iets boven mijn vijf-euro-grens, maar ik wilde hem toch. Dus ik bood €5,40 in plaats van €6,00. Gewoon proberen. En het werd geaccepteerd.
En dan: uitpakken.
Dat vind ik op zichzelf al een feestje. Dit boek was echt een klus van tien minuten. Ik wilde het zonder schaar doen. Dat bleek iets te optimistisch. Met schaar ging het toch beter.

In het verhaal duikt er een lijstje op met boeken die je moet lezen “voor als je het nodig hebt”. Het ligt ineens in de bibliotheek aan Harlow Road. Niemand weet van wie het is. Maar het gaat rond. Mensen lezen die titels, praten erover, geven ze door. Precies in een tijd dat de bibliotheek het moeilijk heeft.
Mukesh is net weduwnaar. Lezen was nooit zijn ding. Tot een bibliotheekboek hem na de dood van zijn vrouw onverwacht troostte. Hij brengt het terug en vraagt om een nieuw boek. Aleisha werkt in de bibliotheek. Tiener. Moeilijke thuissituatie. Een moeder die psychiatrisch ziek is. Ze heeft weinig met boeken. Eerst snauwt ze hem af. Later krijgt ze spijt. Zij vindt het lijstje en begint zelf te lezen.
Ik vond het een ontroerend boek.
In het begin moest ik wennen aan het wisselen van perspectief. Het sprong steeds naar een ander personage. Maar op een gegeven moment viel het samen. En toen zat ik er helemaal in. Mukesh en Aleisha zijn zo verschillend, en toch ontstaat er iets heel echts tussen hen. Dat vond ik mooi. Echt mooi.
Het boek is niet licht. Er zit rouw in. Psychische ziekte. Zelfmoord. Maar het is warm geschreven. Menselijk. Zonder sentimenteel te worden.

En toen zat ik daar, mijn elektrische dekentje, dûh... met een boek over een bibliotheek. Terwijl ik zelf al twee jaar niet in een bibliotheek ben geweest 😉 Heel even dacht ik: misschien moet ik weer eens gaan kijken. Gewoon binnenlopen. Rondneuzen. Maar eerlijk? Ik vind boekenpost uitpakken leuker. Eén boek per keer.
Dus voorlopig blijf ik nog even bij de Boeken-post.
Dit is de eerste op mijn blog.
En nu?
Ik heb De Troostbibliotheek uit.
Ik verkoop hem weer. Voor de helft.
Mijn volgende boek is al onderweg...

Dear Aritha, I like books that don't have simple characters. I have a favorite Hungarian writer (László Németh) who can write in a way that makes me wonder how it's possible to know people so well, especially women's thinking, even though the writer is a man. Of course, this is not an obstacle for a good writer.

VerwijderenI just checked whether any books by László Krasznahorkai have been translated into Dutch, and I found a few. Not that many: War and War, The Melancholy of Resistance — about a strange circus — and Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming. So who knows, I might buy one of those too. But if they’re very gloomy, maybe not.
And yes, another one is on its way. I hope that one is a bit more cheerful. It’s also about a library. I reread my old books too. I’ve only kept the ones I truly love, and I happily read those again and again. Thank you so much for your comment
László Krasznahorkai's books are gloomy and very difficult to read even in Hungarian, his sentences are extremely long. Maybe he's not the one you're looking for but you don't have to believe me.:)
VerwijderenI have a favorite book by him. It is titled: From the North a Mountain, From the South a Lake, From the West a Roads, From the East a River.
It is thought-provoking about the search for perfection and values in human life. It is mostly within us, or we walk past them and always start searching for them again.
The title is long, but it is more understandable if I describe how a perfect Japanese garden is built: From the North a Mountain, From the South a Lake... etc.
After all, the character in the book is looking for perfection, beauty... etc. The symbol of them in the book is that garden.
Nothing like an excellent book.

I'm so glad you liked the book after all of that packaging! I do like thick books, IF the characters are interesting and there's a really good story in there somewhere waiting to be discovered. I usually get books from our public library because I don't have room to buy/keep books, and I don't have the budget to spend on them anymore...unless it is a book by an author that I know personally... I haven't been doing much reading lately. I take spells of reading like crazy for a while, and then I burn out and need a break. I just need to find a good enough book to tempt me back to it again. Thank you for this delightful post. And yes, the only book that has ever TRULY comforted me is The Bible. There's been a lot of good books that I've enjoyed reading in the past, but the Bible is the only one that comforts me.
