LARGE GOTHIC CHURCH

Two weeks ago we went to the city of Gouda to enjoy each other and the beautiful old buildings and amazing architecture. It is impossible for me to show all photos. Below a video of the tower of the Sint Jan church. You can listen to the sonorous sound of the carillon.

The church is the tallest  church of the Netherlands and we saw the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. It was stunning. When sunlight falls through the 72 world-famous stained glass windows, it is immediately clear what makes it so special St John in Gouda.

But it  was hard to photograph them! I tried it. Enjoy.

The windows were so large that it was difficult to see the details. That's why some people used binoculars. Some windows, such as the window of Philip II, are 20 meters high. In 1939 the stained glass was removed in anticipation of war with Germany.

When St. John passes during the Dutch Revolt in 1573 in Protestant hands, altars and saints are removed, but spared the stained glass windows. Glad they did. It was so nice to see them.

  4. I've always associated Gouda with the name of the famous Dutch cheese. But now after reading your post, I find the stained glass windows at the St. John Church in Gouda, as breath-taking! One needs indeed binoculars, a proper camera , and the right angles for good photography of the amazing windows.
