Terug naar Barneveld 🚗

Barneveld.

Leestip: Onze Indische buurten

Frites zoals frites bedoeld is 🍟

Barneveld was leuk.

GOUDA CHEESE

Here I am again. Duta and HappyOne have mentioned Gouda Cheese in their response to my stained glass photos...that's why I share some Gouda Cheese photos now.

Wikipedia: Goudse kaas, "cheese from Gouda") is a mild, yellow cheese, originating from the Netherlands, made from cow's milk. It is one of the most popular cheeses worldwide. When you are here in The Netherlands, you can visit the traditional cheese market takes place every Thursday morning. As in past times, the farmers and traders seal their bargains for the best cheeses through clapping hands.

When we visited the city of Gouda it wasn't market day, so I share a photo taken by W4media. It is a nice picture 😍

My hubby and I visited 't Kaaswinkeltje. That is a very special little store in the heart of the old Gouda inner city. It is the only store in Holland selling exclusively Gouda’s farmer’s cheese.

You can find it on Facebook: HERE

I am walking to the cheese shop (with Dutch flags)

Small cheese

Very large cheese

Ruscello cheese
Made from cow's milk, goat's milk with pepper and paprika
Beautiful souvenirs (and tasty)
It was so busy in the store. Many people bought cheese. I heard different language around me: English, German, Frensch ... We left the shop and walked into another street. There we saw the canal house (the cheese shop) from a different side.

And look: Gouda cheese in the water 💛

I like cheese so much, I eat it almost every day.

LARGE GOTHIC CHURCH

Two weeks ago we went to the city of Gouda to enjoy each other and the beautiful old buildings and amazing architecture. It is impossible for me to show all photos. Below a video of the tower of the Sint Jan church. You can listen to the sonorous sound of the carillon.

The church is the tallest  church of the Netherlands and we saw the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. It was stunning. When sunlight falls through the 72 world-famous stained glass windows, it is immediately clear what makes it so special St John in Gouda.

But it  was hard to photograph them! I tried it. Enjoy.

The windows were so large that it was difficult to see the details. That's why some people used binoculars. Some windows, such as the window of Philip II, are 20 meters high. In 1939 the stained glass was removed in anticipation of war with Germany.

When St. John passes during the Dutch Revolt in 1573 in Protestant hands, altars and saints are removed, but spared the stained glass windows. Glad they did. It was so nice to see them.

FAMOUS DUTCH CHURCH

🙋💕 Thank you so very, very much for all your lovely comments on my other blogpost about Old Dutch ladies. I really appreciate it!

OLD DUTCH CITY

Breda (Dutch pronunciation: listen) is a city and municipality in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. My husband had to be there for a meeting with other architectural engineers. He made some nice pictures for the blog. Yes, yes!!!

Below some church pics. The Grote Kerk or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) is the most important monument and a landmark of Breda.

The church is built in the Brabantine Gothic style.

6 facts from Wikipeda

  • In 1566, the Reformation took place and the church was no longer Catholic. In 1637, the church became Protestant.
  • The organ in the Grote Kerk of Breda is one of the largest organs in the Netherlands and its history goes back to the 16th century. At that time, the organ only possessed 16 stops. After being displaced several times, the organ arrived at its present location in the church in 1712.
  • The Prinsenkapel (Prince chapel) north of the choir is the old mausoleum of the House of Orange-Nassau, ancestors of the Dutch Royal Family.
  • When William of Orange died the plan was to bury him also in the chapel, but Breda was at that time occupied by the Spanish. William of Orange and most of his descendants were buried in the mausoleum in the New Church in Delft.
  • The tower of the church is 97 meters tall.
  • The tower spire burned in 1694 and the current spire was built in 1702. From 1843 onwards many restorations took place, the last big restoration took place from 1993 until 1998.
My hubby was in the church for five minutes. He did not have more time, but I'm so happy to show you these two pictures.

The old cathedrals are good, but the great blue dome that hangs over everything is better. (Thomas Carlyle)

AMAZING DUTCH CITY

My husband sent me beautiful photos from the city of Zierikzee. Medieval walls, gates, churches, towers of long-gone days are still there. It is a picturesque city, that attracts many day trip visitors who are interested in the glorious past.

Tower of the city hall of Zierikzee.

An old Dutch drawbridge

Below you see the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren.  It is a 62 metre tall, unfinished, free standing church tower. The accompanying church was destroyed by a fire in 1832.

In 1454 work started on a church tower, designed by Andries I Keldermans in the Brabantine Gothic style. It was planned to be, according to different sources, either 130 metres or 204 metres tall (the latter would have made it the tallest church tower in the world by far). Work on the tower halted in 1530, when the city went through a financial crisis. The tower is now 62 metres tall, on a base of 24.5 metres by 24.5 metres. Since 1881, it is a property of the state, and it has been designated a Rijksmonument.

The name Saint-Livinus Monster Tower doesn't refer to monsters, but to a minster 😇 (Source: Wikipedia)

DUTCH CHURCH

Today my husband was in Schiedam for  a business meeting. He sent me a photo of an old church surrounded by two buildings of the town hall

BASALICA

The Basilica of St. Liduina is a neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church in Schiedam, built in the period 1878-1881. The church is known locally under the names Singelkerk and St. Liduinabasiliek. The organ in the Liduinastraat Basilica is the oldest electro-pneumatic organ of the Netherlands. In the period 1999-2001 the instrument has been completely restored.

Liduina Basiliek

The city of Schiedam is located in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is enclosed between Rotterdam (east), Midden-Delfland (north), Vlaardingen (west) and the river Nieuwe Maas (south).

SCHIEDAM

Mijn man had een vergadering in Schiedam.

HOOG CATHARIJNE IN UTRECHT

My husband is a construction engineer. He calculated small details of the "new" Hoog Catharijne in Utrecht. I share some photos and a video.
Hoog Catharijne is with over 150 stores one of the largest indoor shopping centers in the Netherlands.

HOOG CATHARIJNE

Have A Good Journey!

A small Gipsy wagon drove through the city of Tiel. My husband saw this nice wagon during his break and made some quick pictures. Do you love it?

Zigeunerwagen
Leuk!

Have a Good Journey!
Latcko - drom (you read it on the wagon) means: Have a Good Journey. (Goede reis!) My husband also made a video of a little girl on the wagon, who could help the organ grinder. Listen :-)

Beach Life in Holland

We spent two days in Katwijk aan Zee, when our son (13) was at school camp. Katwijk is a characteristic coastal village in the dune and bulb area. It has a wide sandy beach. And... it is also the landing point for the TAT-14 international telecommunications ⌁

Sharing some photos. Looking at the left side I saw:

Tomorrow I will share the sunset. It was so beautiful!
