FAMOUS DUTCH CHURCH

🙋💕 Thank you so very, very much for all your lovely comments on my other blogpost about Old Dutch ladies. I really appreciate it!

OLD DUTCH CITY

Breda (Dutch pronunciation: listen) is a city and municipality in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. My husband had to be there for a meeting with other architectural engineers. He made some nice pictures for the blog. Yes, yes!!!

Below some church pics. The Grote Kerk or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) is the most important monument and a landmark of Breda.

The church is built in the Brabantine Gothic style.

6 facts from Wikipeda

  • In 1566, the Reformation took place and the church was no longer Catholic. In 1637, the church became Protestant.
  • The organ in the Grote Kerk of Breda is one of the largest organs in the Netherlands and its history goes back to the 16th century. At that time, the organ only possessed 16 stops. After being displaced several times, the organ arrived at its present location in the church in 1712.
  • The Prinsenkapel (Prince chapel) north of the choir is the old mausoleum of the House of Orange-Nassau, ancestors of the Dutch Royal Family.
  • When William of Orange died the plan was to bury him also in the chapel, but Breda was at that time occupied by the Spanish. William of Orange and most of his descendants were buried in the mausoleum in the New Church in Delft.
  • The tower of the church is 97 meters tall.
  • The tower spire burned in 1694 and the current spire was built in 1702. From 1843 onwards many restorations took place, the last big restoration took place from 1993 until 1998.
My hubby was in the church for five minutes. He did not have more time, but I'm so happy to show you these two pictures.

  13. Since I'm Catholic, I love the old Cathedrals. They are beautiful and have so much history to them. When the girls travel, they like to go to mass at the Cathedrals. This Dutch city is so charming. Nice of your husband to take pictures for you, Aritha.

  14. I love old churches and cathedrals for their beauty and for their reminder that God is there and everywhere. I got my B.A. in Art History and did my thesis on Mosques, they are beautiful buildings too. Churches capture my heart though.
