WESTKAPELLE SEA DIKE

On the Second Day of Christmas we have visited our family in the province of Zeeland. It was amazing. Just before sunset we drove to the sea dike to enjoy the sunset. It was cold. But oh so beautiful! I really love to see the ships on the North Sea.

Westkapelle is a small city on the island Walcheren, in the province Zeeland of the Netherlands. It is on the westernmost tip of Walcheren and is surrounded by the sea on three sides.

  1. My word, Aritha, you write English well! I am sure it was well worth it to brave the cold and enjoy the spectacle of the ships sailing by on the North Sea. Whenever I have done such a thing I always imagine the lives of the people on board and wonder where they are sailing to. How long will they be away from home? What kinds of storms might they face. The New Year is almost upon us. May it bring you great happiness, Aritha.

  4. The sea and sky, and next the addition of the ship in the distance, and family members -it's all awsome! I like the name Westkapelle (kapelle means chapel or choir music as far as I know).
Have a happy, blessed 2019 year!

    1. You're right that kapelle means chapel. Maybe a chapel was built first, before there was a settlement. Westkapelle may have been founded in the time of the Vikings. The local dialect contains accents that can also be heard among Scandinavian people. Thanks for your new year wish DUTA.

    1. O yes, I think you are more close to your ocean than I am to the sea :) I love your ocean photos. Also the car with flowers. That's OK too.

  9. Het is altijd lekker langs de zee te wandelen Aritha, en daarna 'n heerlijke kom warme chocolade melk. Zo deden en doen wij dat meestal, met of zonder de kinderen.
    groet Kees.
